1 Kings 19:19-21(NLT)

The Call of Elisha

19) So Elijah went and found Elisha son of Shaphat plowing a field. There were twelve teams of oxen in the field, and Elisha was plowing with the twelfth team. Elijah went over to him and threw his cloak across his shoulders and then walked away. 20) Elisha left the oxen standing there, ran after Elijah, and said to him, “First let me go and kiss my father and mother good-bye, and then I will go with you!” Elijah replied, “Go on back, but think about what I have done to you.” 21) So Elisha returned to his oxen and slaughtered them. He used the wood from the plow to build a fire to roast their flesh. He passed around the meat to the townspeople, and they all ate. Then he went with Elijah as his assistant.

2 Kings 2:1-15(NLT)

Elijah Taken into Heaven

 1) When the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven in a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were traveling from Gilgal. 2) And Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here, for the Lord has told me to go to Bethel.” But Elisha replied, “As surely as the Lord lives and you yourself live, I will never leave you!” So they went down together to Bethel. 3) The group of prophets from Bethel came to Elisha and asked him, “Did you know that the Lord is going to take your master away from you today?” “Of course I know,” Elisha answered. “But be quiet about it.” 4)Then Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here, for the Lord has told me to go to Jericho.” But Elisha replied again, “As surely as the Lord lives and you yourself live, I will never leave you.” So they went on together to Jericho. 5) Then the group of prophets from Jericho came to Elisha and asked him, “Did you know that the Lord is going to take your master away from you today?” “Of course I know,” Elisha answered. “But be quiet about it.” 6) Then Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here, for the Lord has told me to go to the Jordan River.” But again Elisha replied, “As surely as the Lord lives and you yourself live, I will never leave you.” So they went on together. 7) Fifty men from the group of prophets also went and watched from a distance as Elijah and Elisha stopped beside the Jordan River. 8) Then Elijah folded his cloak together and struck the water with it. The river divided, and the two of them went across on dry ground! 9) When they came to the other side, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me what I can do for you before I am taken away.” And Elisha replied, “Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit and become your successor.” 10) “You have asked a difficult thing,” Elijah replied. “If you see me when I am taken from you, then you will get your request. But if not, then you won’t.” 11) As they were walking along and talking, suddenly a chariot of fire appeared, drawn by horses of fire. It drove between the two men, separating them, and Elijah was carried by a whirlwind into heaven. 12) Elisha saw it and cried out, “My father! My father! I see the chariots and charioteers of Israel!” And as they disappeared from sight, Elisha tore his clothes in distress. 13) Elisha picked up Elijah’s cloak, which had fallen when he was taken up. Then Elisha returned to the bank of the Jordan River. 14) He struck the water with Elijah’s cloak and cried out, “Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah?” Then the river divided, and Elisha went across. 15) When the group of prophets from Jericho saw from a distance what happened, they exclaimed, “Elijah’s spirit rests upon Elisha!” And they went to meet him and bowed to the ground before him.

Ephesians 4:11-16(GNT)

11) It was he who gave gifts to people; he appointed some to be apostles, others to be prophets, others to be evangelists, others to be pastors and teachers.12) He did this to prepare all God's people for the work of Christian service, in order to build up the body of Christ.13) And so we shall all come together to that oneness in our faith and in our knowledge of the Son of God; we shall become mature people, reaching to the very height of Christ's full stature.14) Then we shall no longer be children, carried by the waves and blown about by every shifting wind of the teaching of deceitful people, who lead others into error by the tricks they invent.15) Instead, by speaking the truth in a spirit of love, we must grow up in every way to Christ, who is the head.16)Under his control all the different parts of the body fit together, and the whole body is held together by every joint with which it is provided. So when each separate part works as it should, the whole body grows and builds itself up through love.

1 Timothy 3:1-7

 1) Here is a trustworthy saying: If anyone sets his heart on being an overseer, he desires a noble task. 2) Now the overseer must be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3) not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. 4) He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him with proper respect. 5) (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?) 6) He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil. 7) He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil’s trap.

To everyone who shares with us in the privilege of believing that our God and Savior Jesus Christ will do what is just and fair. 2)I pray that God will be kind to you and will let you live in perfect peace! May you keep learning more and more about God and our Lord Jesus. 3)We have everything we need to live a life that pleases God. It was all given to us by God's own power, when we learned that he had invited us to share in his wonderful goodness. 4)God made great and marvelous promises, so that his nature would become part of us. Then we could escape our evil desires and the corrupt influences of this world. 5)Do your best to improve your faith. You can do this by adding goodness, understanding, 6)self-control, patience, devotion to God, 7)concern for others, and love. 8)If you keep growing in this way, it will show that what you know about our Lord Jesus Christ has made your lives useful and meaningful. 9)But if you don't grow, you are like someone who is nearsighted or blind, and you have forgotten that your past sins are forgiven. 10)My friends, you must do all you can to show that God has really chosen and selected you. If you keep on doing this, you won't stumble and fall. 11)Then our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will give you a glorious welcome into his kingdom that will last forever. 12)You are holding firmly to the truth that you were given. But I am still going to remind you of these things. 13)In fact, I think I should keep on reminding you until I leave this body.

Genesis 11:1-9

 The Tower of Babel

 1) Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. 2) As men moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there. 3) They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. 4) Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth.” 5) But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building. 6) The LORD said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. 7) Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.” 8) So the LORD scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. 9) That is why it was called Babel—because there the LORD confused the language of the whole world. From there the LORD scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

2 Corinthians 10:17-18 (NLT)

17) As the Scriptures say, “If you want to boast, boast only about the Lord.” 18) When people commend themselves, it doesn’t count for much. The important thing is for the Lord to commend them.

Luke 15:1-32

The Parable of the Lost Sheep

1) Now the tax collectors and “sinners” were all gathering around to hear him. 2) But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”

3) Then Jesus told them this parable: 4) “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? 5) And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders 6) and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ 7) I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.

The Parable of the Lost Coin

8) “Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Does she not light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? 9) And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ 10) In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

11) Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons. 12) The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them. 13) “Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. 14) After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. 15) So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. 16) He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything. 17) “When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired men have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! 18) I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. 19) I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired men.’ 20) So he got up and went to his father. “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. 21) “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ 22) “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23) Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. 24) For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate. 25) “Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. 26) So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. 27) ‘Your brother has come,’ he replied, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’ 28) “The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. 29) But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. 30) But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’ 31) “‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. 32) But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’”

The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away;

may the name of the LORD be praised.”

 22) In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.

 

Job 2:9-10

9) His wife said to him, “Are you still holding on to your integrity? Curse God and die!”

 10) He replied, “You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?”

 In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.

Galatians 4:1-7 (NIV)

1) What I am saying is that as long as the heir is a child, he is no different from a slave, although he owns the whole estate. 2) He is subject to guardians and trustees until the time set by his father. 3) So also, when we were children, we were in slavery under the basic principles of the world. 4) But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, 5) to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons. 6) Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” 7) So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir.

Jonah 3:1-10

1) Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time: 2) “Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.”

 3) Jonah obeyed the word of the LORD and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very important city—a visit required three days. 4) On the first day, Jonah started into the city. He proclaimed: “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overturned.” 5) The Ninevites believed God. They declared a fast, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth.

 6) When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust. 7) Then he issued a proclamation in Nineveh:

   “By the decree of the king and his nobles:

   Do not let any man or beast, herd or flock, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink. 8) But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence. 9) Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish.”

 10) When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he had compassion and did not bring upon them the destruction he had threatened.

 

Jonah 4:1-4

1) But Jonah was greatly displeased and became angry. 2) He prayed to the LORD, “O LORD, is this not what I said when I was still at home? That is why I was so quick to flee to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity. 3) Now, O LORD, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to live.”

 4) But the LORD replied, “Have you any right to be angry?”

John 15:1-8

 The Vine and the Branches

 1) “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2) He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. 3) You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4) Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. 5) “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6) If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7) If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. 8) This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
